A savings goal is easier to stick to when you can see the finish line. This savings goal calculator answers the two questions people ask most: how long will it take? and how much do I need to put aside? It works in any currency, because you simply enter the amounts in yours.

How to use the savings goal calculator

  1. Enter your savings goal and what you have already saved.
  2. Choose a mode:
    • How long will it take? Enter the amount you save each time and how often: every day, week or month. You’ll see how many deposits you need and the date you reach your goal.
    • How much per week? Pick the date you want to reach your goal. You’ll see how many weeks are left and how much to save each week.

How the calculation works

How long: the amount still missing is goal − already saved. Deposits needed = missing amount ÷ amount per deposit, rounded up, since a part deposit is still a deposit. The goal date is today plus that many days, weeks or calendar months.

How much: weeks left = days from today to your date ÷ 7. Save per week = missing amount ÷ weeks left, rounded up to the next cent, so the last week never comes up short.

The calculator doesn’t add interest. It plans only with the money you put aside yourself.

Worked examples

Goal 500, saved 50, 25 a week. Missing: 500 − 50 = 450. Deposits: 450 ÷ 25 = 18. You reach your goal in 18 weeks.

Same goal in 10 weeks. Missing: 450. Per week: 450 ÷ 10 = 45. Put aside 45 a week and you’re there on your date.

Goal 1,200, nothing saved yet, 100 a month. 1,200 ÷ 100 = 12 deposits, so one year from today.

Tips for reaching your savings goal

  • Make it automatic. A standing transfer on payday does the work for you.
  • Start small. A smaller weekly amount you can keep up beats a bigger one you skip.
  • Use the how-much mode to test dates. Moving the date a few weeks later can make the weekly amount much friendlier.
  • Count small extras. Gift cards, cashback and change you’d otherwise spend can all go towards the goal.

Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent or saved.

Questions people ask

How do I work out how long it takes to save for something?
Subtract what you’ve already saved from your goal, then divide by what you save per period and round up. For a goal of 500 with 50 saved and 25 a week: 450 ÷ 25 = 18 weeks.
How much do I need to save each week to reach my goal?
Divide the amount still missing by the number of weeks until your target date. 450 still to go in 10 weeks means 45 a week.
Does the calculator include interest?
No. It counts only what you put aside, which keeps the plan simple and the target date on the safe side.
Which currency does it use?
Any. Enter amounts in your own currency; the results are in the same currency.
